CTOHype and reality of generative AI
Over the last 2 years, generative AI has captivated the imagination and curiosity of tech enthusiasts from many different industries. And I would be surprised if it didn't. My own initial encounter with generative AI was not born out of a fascination with new tech but from a necessity to possibly integrate these powerful tools into our workflows. My goal was to understand how these technologies can be leveraged to make better decisions and improve the efficiency of our own company.
This journey began with simple experiments – tinkering with early versions of GPT models to generate code snippets, automate mundane tasks, and explore creative AI solutions for complex design problems. The results were mixed, offering both glimpses of potential and stark limitations.
Since then, the capabilities of these AI models have grown exponentially. They can draft articles, design graphics, and even suggest software code. However, their true prowess doesn't lie in replacing humans but in augmenting our ability to perform tasks more efficiently and with a novel approach.
It's crucial to recognize that these technologies are tools, not replacements. They serve best when used to enhance our inherent skills – helping us to draft faster, ideate broader, and automate the routine, thus freeing us up for strategic tasks that machines cannot replicate.
One prevalent myth is that AI will soon replace software developers entirely. This idea stems from AI's ability to automate certain tasks, such as writing basic code or implementing simple functions. However, the reality is much more nuanced. The AI was trained on billions of data points, and it was also trained on some code snippets that were already part of its corpus. While AI tools can assist developers by handling repetitive tasks that they've already seen, they cannot handle complex problem-solving based on real-world scenarios.
Software does not consist of small functions, it consists of interlinked pieces of code that work well together, not separately.
Examples from our projects where AI proved beneficial
In one instance, we used an AI tool to analyze user behavior data from an application we developed. The AI provided insights that helped us refine the user interface to better meet our users' needs, leading to increased satisfaction and engagement. The AI was used as a tool to generate better ideas, that our UX designers refined into concepts.
AI systems often require precise instructions and large amounts of data to function effectively, and they still suffer from hallucinations of things that are impossible, so they still require human supervision.
In summary, while generative AI is a powerful tool that can significantly enhance our capabilities, it’s not a replacement for the creativity, insight, and technical expertise that human developers bring to the table. We must use AI judiciously, understanding its limitations and focusing on its ability to augment rather than replace human effort.
